Rossif Sutherland's upcoming album will feature three songs that he
worked on with Jeff Lynne. You can listen to a rough mix of one of
the tracks (plus others from the album) on Rossif's MySpace page.

"I wrote the words and the music and Jeff produced them," says
Sutherland. "Apart from me singing and composing the simple
foundation of the arrangement for the songs, the rest of the music is
all Jeff. My dream was always to make music, and working with Jeff
was a dream come true."

Since doing the three tracks with Jeff, Sutherland has been working
on the rest of the album with his friend Rye Randa, a Los Angeles
producer/songwriter.

Sutherland says he's done this album on his own terms: "I made a film
last year and spent all the money I made trying to record this album.
My problem is not so much writing the songs as it is finding the time
to record them. There will probably be 15 or 16 songs on this first
album. Another fifteen are waiting for their day in the studio."

Sutherland's film career (he's now in Manitoba for five weeks
shooting another movie) has kept him from finishing the album, but he
looks forward to getting the album out there. He hopes to have a
release date soon.

Jeff Lynne Explains How Electric Light Orchestra Came Back to Life

The Traveling Wilbury on ELO's new LP, why most past members aren't along for the ride and what's happening next

On September 14th, 2014 an extremely nervous Jeff Lynne walked onstage at London's Hyde Park for his first major Electric Light Orchestra concert since the group folded in 1986. "We were fenced off by the BBC, and I couldn't see the audience," he says. "I was walking up the stairs with my fingers crossed, hoping that people hadn't gone home since they already saw the act they came to see."

But as he burst into the opening notes of "All Over the World," he saw a sea of 50,000 fans singing along. "I felt such relief that all these people were there, screaming and clapping to every song," he says. "It made me feel really good. I was just knocked out, just the most wonderful crowd I'd ever seen. I had so much fun doing it, I decided to come back and do a new album."

This wasn't the first time Lynne attempted to resurrect Electric Light Orchestra. In the summer of 2001, he released Zoom (the first ELO album since 1986's Balance of Power) and booked an ambitious arena tour to promote it. He taped a VH1 Storytellers concert and a PBS concert, but ticket sales were so dismal, the entire tour was canceled. "That showed me I probably shouldn't even bother," Lynne says. "My manager spared me the details of everything, but I wasn't too demoralized because I got some tunes in films and I just love recording."



It seemed like a permanent death sentence for ELO, and in the aftermath, Lynne returned to his day job as a record producer, but slowly he began seeing a groundswell of interest in his old band and offers began coming in. Getting the band back onto the stage still remained a distant thought until BBC DJ Chris Evans began pushing the issue on the air. His listeners responded in such overwhelming numbers that Lynne agreed to give it a try.

After the triumphant Hyde Park show, Lynne returned back to his Los Angeles home full of energy, which he transferred to the sessions for ELO's upcoming album, Alone in the Universe, out November 13th. The LP was cut across 18 months at Lynne's home studio, with the singer-songwriter playing nearly instrument himself. "I did everything except the shaker and the tambourine, which my engineer Steve [Jay] played," says Lynne. "It was just a two-man exercise, with him manning all the lifeboats and me doing all the singing and playing."

The end result, credited to Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra, has a vintage ELO feel with a few modern touches. Lead single "When I Was a Boy" was inspired by Lynne's memories of his childhood. "My interest in music grabbed me when I was a boy," he says. "I used to go under my bed listening to the crystal set [radio.] There weren't many good stations back then. You only got about an hour of pop music and that was on a Saturday night. That's what led to the song, which was one of the quickest I've ever written lyrically and musically."

The title track was inspired by an article Lynne read about the Voyager 1 probe leaving the solar system, becoming the first man-made object to enter interstellar space. "It tickled me thinking about that," he says. "I mean, how lonely can you get? I sort of turned it into a missing-somebody type of deal like Voyager 1 was missing Voyager 2, so I turned it into people."

Lynne's singing voice is remarkably well-preserved, especially considering that he turns 68 in December. That's at least partially due to the fact that, unlike most of his peers, he hasn't blown it out on the road. ELO, which had huge success in the 1970s with massive hits like "Evil Woman," "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Don't Bring Me Down," saw their fortunes decline as musical tastes shifted in the 1980s. They last played a real tour in 1982 and disbanded completely after a tiny run of shows four years later.

Months after the tour wrapped, Lynne was asked to produce George Harrison's 1987 album, Cloud Nine, which was a huge comeback for the Beatle, giving him the hit "Got My Mind Set on You." "It gave me a whole new career," says Lynne, who crafted big singles for Tom Petty and Roy Orbison in the following two years before teaming up with them, along with Bob Dylan, in the Traveling Wilburys. "It was a marvelous time," says Lynne. "I thought to myself, 'Wow, I should have been doing this years ago.'"

The others members of ELO didn't have anywhere near the success Lynne had on his own, so in 1989, drummer Bev Bevan formed a group called ELO Part II, which by 2000 evolved into the Orchestra with a rotating crew of musicians. This roped Lynne into all sorts of legal battles, causing bitterness that persists to this day. "It's water under the bridge," he says. "But I don't like talking about them. It's just people pretending to be ... What happens is that the name gets changed to ELO, or the promoter changes it, and I have to sue them every time."

Lynne says he hasn't spoken to Bevan in about 30 years, but original ELO keyboardist Richard Tandy was on hand for the Hyde Park show and will be involved in all future live activity. (No other past member is involved in the new group.) "Richard is my lifetime man in the group," says Lynne. "He'd be in the studio with me when other people wouldn't be. It's just my choice. He's a great musician, a great piano player and I really enjoy his company."

There are no ELO shows on the books right now, though Lynne says his manager is planning some big concerts in England in the spring. Plans for American shows are a little more tenuous, and the hope is obviously to avoid the Zoom fiasco and book conservatively. "It would probably be a mixture of theaters and arenas in America," says Lynne. "To be honest, I love theaters because the sound is always so much better."

For now, Lynne is taking things one step at a time. "As far as more shows, we'll see what happens," he says. "It it goes well, I'll certainly do more stuff. Let's hope it goes well."

Lush textures of clickety-clackety keyboards, slide guitar and disco-ish drums open up "One Step at a Time," a new Electric Light Orchestra single that will appear on the group's upcoming LP Alone in the Universe. When frontman Jeff Lynne, who recorded nearly every instrument on the record, sings, though, it sounds like classic ELO, as he pleads for understanding before a relationship totally breaks down.

When it comes out on November 13th, Alone in the Universe will be the first Electric Light Orchestra LP since 2001's Zoom and it finds Lynne flying solo mostly. "I did everything except the shaker and the tambourine, which my engineer Steve [Jay] played," he told Rolling Stone earlier this month. "It was just a two-man exercise, with him manning all the lifeboats and me doing all the singing and playing."

So far, Lynne has released two songs from the album, the reggae-tinged "When the Night Comes" and the piano ballad "When I Was a Boy." He has also put out a quasi-autobiographical video for the latter song, which depicts him as a young man looking up at the group's trademark spaceship logo.

Call him Mr. New Sky: How Jeff Lynne revived ELO for 'Alone in the Universe'

Before it was Jeff Lynne's recording studio, the barn-like structure on his property in Beverly Hills housed a previous owner's collection of vintage pinball machines.

"The guy was just mad for them," said the British musician best known for masterminding Electric Light Orchestra, as he stood in the airy, wood-floored space on a recent afternoon. "Had them all the way around, like it was an arcade."

Lynne, who prefers recording at home over working in any of the high-end studios in Los Angeles, filled the room with different stuff, including guitar amplifiers, a grand piano and a blown-up reproduction of the cover of his 1990 solo album, "Armchair Theatre."

But the way this 67-year-old talks about making music suggests he thinks about it in the same way the other man might've viewed those pinball machines: as a retiree's diversion, something undertaken primarily to keep himself amused.

"My songs have been very successful, so I kind of don't have to do anything, really," Lynne said, referring to meticulously arranged, addictively melodic hits such as "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic" and "Mr. Blue Sky," which established ELO as a radio fixture in the late '70s and continue to turn up in movies and commercials. "I do this because I just really love making up tunes."

Even so, the outside world keeps listening. At February's Grammy Awards, ELO's performance of "Mr. Blue Sky" with the British singer Ed Sheeran scored that night's biggest reaction among users of Shazam, the popular music-discovery app. Hip acts like Tame Impala and Daft Punk are attracting young fans with songs that bear Lynne's pop-psychedelic influence.

And now there's a surprisingly strong new ELO album, the band's first in more than a decade, on which Lynne sounds freshly rejuvenated, his songwriting and production skills back at the level that made him a reluctant rock star and later led to collaborations with legends such as George Harrison and Roy Orbison. Due Nov. 13, "Alone in the Universe" — which features Lynne playing nearly every instrument — seems poised to shift the spotlight back to a vaguely mysterious figure who says he's happiest tinkering away in his private studio.

"I guess that means I haven't been wasting my time," he said with a chuckle, though it was clear that the prospect of wasted time could hardly trouble him any less.

Seated behind a large mixing board in a gear-stuffed control room, his eyes hidden as always behind his signature aviator shades, Lynne acknowledged he's not entirely indifferent to praise. In fact, it was the warm reception ELO got last year at a concert at London's Hyde Park — the group's first big show since it broke up in 1986 — that persuaded him to accelerate work on the follow-up to "Zoom," a so-so comeback attempt from 2001 that failed to inspire widespread interest.

"I was going to make an album anyway," he clarified. "But, I mean, 50,000 people all going mad and singing along with every song — that was pretty nice."

You can hear traces of ELO's trademark sound throughout "Alone in the Universe," in the shimmering guitars and movie-score strings and elaborate vocal harmonies. Yet Lynne says his songwriting was crucially shaped by his experience making "Long Wave," a small-batch 2012 solo record featuring his loving renditions of standards like "At Last" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."

"Learning those songs was a bit like going to university," he said. "I had to sit and play them hundreds of times to get the chord changes and the bass parts and everything." And that, he added, led him to try different things with his own songs. "They're a little bit more adventurous; they go to places I haven't been before."

In a sense, Lynne's internalizing those classic structures is in keeping with his reputation as an expert copycat, a skilled craftsman capable of creating pristine knockoffs of styles pioneered by the Beatles and Chuck Berry, among others. (There's no doubting that the surviving Beatles themselves were responding to Lynne's obvious devotion when they hired him in the mid-'90s to produce "Real Love" and "Free as a Bird," two ostensibly new Beatles songs using archived vocals by John Lennon.)

But the copycat role doesn't quite allow for the vivid emotion Lynne brings to "Alone in the Universe." Singing in his still-pliant voice about romantic longing and his fascination with outer space, Lynne makes the crisp, clever music feel like his, not someone else's. More impressively, he keeps the nostalgia at a minimum, even in "When I Was a Boy," a reminiscence of his childhood in Birmingham in which he describes music as an escape from a life he might have spent working as a milkman.

Perhaps that shouldn't come as a surprise: After all, Lynne, unlike many rockers, happily adapted to disco (in his case, on ELO's 1979 album, "Discovery") back when it was threatening to put guitar bands out of business. And today if you want to hear ELO's biggest songs on Spotify, you won't find "ELO's Greatest Hits," that decades-old record-store staple, but a set of re-recorded versions that Lynne made at home in 2012.

In person, Lynne was no more sentimental about the good old days. When a plaque was pointed out on the studio wall congratulating the producer for 8 million copies sold of the Beatles' "Anthology," he didn't appear especially bothered by the idea that such a sales figure is unlikely to be matched in the age of digital streaming. New technologies excite him more than old revenue streams.

Or some new technologies do, anyway. One exception to Lynne's embrace of the current moment is his avowed distaste for social media, which most pop stars (even many his age) use to maintain their fans' loyalty. Lynne doesn't get it, saying his talent is creating music, not tweeting or Instagramming. Of course, that's an easy position to hold when you're generally uninterested, as Lynne insists he is, in being a public figure.

"Yeah, I don't want to be one of those," he said with a laugh.

But if Lynne has no qualms about forever being the least visible member of the Traveling Wilburys — the late-'80s supergroup that briefly joined him with Harrison, Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty — he seems to be thinking at least a little about his musical legacy. In 2012, he took part in a documentary called "Mr. Blue Sky" tracing the long arc of his career (while mostly avoiding his personal life).

And for the first time in the group's history, the new Electric Light Orchestra album is billed to Jeff Lynne's ELO, the same name he's planning to perform under in a handful of rare concerts tentatively planned for this year and next.

As with Twitter, Lynne is unsparing about his lack of enthusiasm for the road. "I hated it when we were playing arenas," he said. "You wake up at 9 o'clock, have a horrible hot dog at the airport for breakfast, then do three flights to get where you're going. As soon as I was able to stop, I said, 'That's it.'"

Still, given the success of the Hyde Park gig, he's willing to play some shows if it buys him some more time in the place he loves most.

"It's the detail that makes the music whatever it is," he said, gesturing toward several racks laden with equipment and instruments. "That's why I can't ever stop in here, adding bits to my songs.

"I'll probably have another listen to the new record and go, 'Ah, what else could I have done?'"

Да слушай, чистая формальность. Как я понял, исключительно связано с юридическими тонкостями по поводу прав на название группы. В интервью Джефф упомянул что чтобы не было потом никаких передергиваний и посягательств на материал, он назвался именно так: "Оркестр Электрического света Джеффа Линна". Неплохо звучит

Jeff Lynne tells MOJO how an idle chat with George Harrison led to possibly the most super super-group ever: the Traveling Wilburys.

IF IT HAD been up to Bob Dylan the Traveling Wilburys would have been simply known as Roy And The Boys, Jeff Lynne has told MOJO.

The ELO leader speaks in the MOJO Interview in our latest issue (December 15 / #265), and in a career-spanning look back he recalls how a late night conversation led to him forming a super-group that included Bob Dylan, who really wanted to be “just one of the lads”.

“I’d been working with George Harrison on Cloud Nine for maybe two months. We would always end the night having a couple beers and [smoking] a thingy, and he said, ‘You know what? Me and you should have a group.’” Lynne tells MOJO’s Bob Mehr.

“And I said, ‘Really, a group? That’d be great. Who would you have in it?’ I thought he was going to say, ‘Oh, Fred Trilby from up the road,’ or whatever, but he didn’t. He said, ‘Bob Dylan.’”

From there the recruitment process escalated quickly. “[After Bob] I said, ‘Well, can we have Roy Orbison as well?’” laughs Lynne. “Once George had said Bob Dylan, I thought, ‘Fuck, the world is my oyster.’ He said, ‘Yeah, of course we can – I love Roy.’”

When the high-end team, including Tom Petty, convened, the Traveling Wilburys sessions proceeded on a surprisingly even footing.

“I think everybody was kind of looking up to Bob. He didn’t take any leadership role, he just wanted to be one of the lads,” explains Lynne. “He actually wanted to call the band Roy And The Boys.”

Да не будет, Игорь. Понятно было и так, что альбом зарелизят моментально: до или после оф продаж. Те, кому надо, всё равно пойдут и купят пластинку. А на форуме у Володи альбом очень хвалят. Все в восторге. Я пока не слушал. Я жду ))))))

Боюсь, качество даже в лослессе будет примерно таким же... Фирменный саунд Джеффа в последние годы...
Сам в некотором недоумении: шикарная музыка, офигенная аппаратура, а от релиза к релизу ничего не меняется в плане качества: то будто через поролоновую прокладку на микрофоне записано, то какой-то перегруз непонятный. Чудакует старина Джефф! Хотя музыка как всегда шикарная. Как только появится компашка в продаже, куплю сразу.

Я не удержалась и послушала альбом. Ну что сказать - я в смятении. :) С одной стороны, да, это Джефф, слышны нотки ZOOM, Тома Петти, Дилана и даже Орбисона. Но с другой стороны, я ждала чего-то в духе альбомов 76 и 77 годов: яркие, но не банальные мелодии, разные фишки, типа как концовка на Shangri-la или скороговорка на Turn To Stone. Хотя человек уже давно полюбил стиль работы в Travelling Wilburys и не скрывает этого. И возраст уже давно не Иисуса Христа, в котором был написан шедевральный Time. На данный момент я обожаю When I Was a Boy. Остальные вещи пока "в сомнении".

Да, альбом слишком ровный, если не сказать, "сероватый" (прости, Джефф!)... Всё-таки золотые годы у него позади, увы...
Всё тот же мелодизм, узнаваемость, но нет именно ярких "фишек", свойственных его музыке тех, ЭЛОвских лет. И мы стареем, и он. И при всём при том хоть изредка, но радует он нас хотя бы своей музыкальной активностью.
В этом году многие "старички" рока выпустили свои сольники, взять хотя бы того же Гилмора. Вот он меня зацепил новым альбомом, не с первого раза, но зацепил! Кроме самой музыки (в альбоме есть и хиты, и откровенный проходняк), альбом ещё и офигительно прописан. Джеффу этого не хватало всю его карьеру. Увы, но звучание его основных альбомов, особенно на цифровых носителях - это "каша". Я на это сознательно не обращал внимания, потому как сама музыка у него просто сводила с ума.
Увы, времена ушли...

Мне кажется, вы все делаете несколько скоропалительные выводы. СтОит, наверное, подождать нормального качества и полноценный вариант с тремя бонусами. Послушать подольше. Как хорошее вино попробовать не спеша. Насчёт минорного - так и SM мажорным никак не назвать.

Наташа Последние работы - и мне тоже. Я в своё время к Zoom'у долго привыкал. Ничего, сейчас слушаю с удовольствием.
А вот когда я впервые услышал по радио Twilight в 81-м году, я чуть не заплакал! Музыка убила меня наповал! С тех пор это мой любимый музыкант. Вот это была харизма, вот это был драйв! Странно, что сам Джефф очень стесняется своих же альбомов 81-го и 83-го годов.
P.S. Очень понравилась песня Alone In The Universe. Она отражает моё душевное состояние в последний год.

Так я тоже и у меня он любимый. Но если послушать полную первоначальную версию альбома, довольно мрачная картина вырисовывается в голове. Что, безусловно, не делает альбом хуже.

Насчёт AITU - уверен, он заслуженно займёт своё почетное место среди реализованных фантазий гения.

В общем, купил я в айТюнсе альбом с двумя бонусами, послушал...
Как я и писал, по качеству от ранее выложенного неизвестного рипа отличий нет. Не лосслесс, конечно, но обычно Эппл для айТюнса делает довольно качественный конверт в свой формат, на слух гораздо приятнее, чем мр3 того же битрейта.
Бонусы на "троечку" имхо. Не знаю, каким будет третий, который на премиальном японце будет, но без этих двух я бы обошелся. Может, потом прислушаю, не знаю.
Удивил буклет, обложка альбома в нём не такая, к какой мы привыкли.

Совсем не соглашусь имхо. Правда, всего по паре секунд окинул взглядом каждый трек, но предчувствую радость. Первый трек - кантри, что-то в духе Border Line. А второй навеян 50-60-ми. Ушедшей эпохе. Прозрачный легкий звук, насколько успел оценить по короткому фрагменту. Минус, что обе песни короткие: 2 минуты и 2 с половиной соответственно. Зато мажорные (о чём предполагал ранее), которые только добавляют позитива альбому.

Альбом 5 часов назад в обновленном качестве мр320 с 2 бонусами выложили на торрентс ру.
